Pinewood Battery lies within Lung Fu Shan Country Park, overlooking the western approaches to Victoria Harbour. Situated on high ground, it was an important coastal defence position. Construction began in 1901, and at 307 metres above sea level, the battery strengthened the defences of the western part of Hong Kong Island. As the threat of air attack grew, Pinewood Battery was rebuilt as an anti-aircraft gun battery, with a command post, an observation post, and several shelters added; its enemy shifted from France and Russia to Japan. In 1941, during the Japanese attack on Hong Kong, the battery came under repeated air raids. However, the remains of the gun platforms, command post, observation post, war shelters, and even the latrine have survived in remarkably complete condition. Visitors can follow the approximately 400-metre Pinewood Battery Heritage Trail to learn about this chapter of wartime history.
